Summary of written submission
Deployment of solar PV in Scotland is currently relatively low as compared to other regions of the UK and high deployment levels of wind in Scotland. However there is huge potential in Scotland, and solar and wind balance each other out very well. We therefore recommend that:
- The Scottish Government establishes a Solar Action Plan for Scotland, setting targets for 2020 for solar PV and solar thermal.
- Establish some form of support mechanism for solar in Scotland, such as a similar system to the UK Feed-in Tariff or Contract for Difference mechanism, to bridge the gap between now and when solar can compete subsidy-free.
- Actively support the implementation of energy storage, both at domestic level and at large-scale.
- Recognise the benefits of co-locating solar, wind and storage and for the different technologies to share grid connections, thereby providing a solution to Scotlands major grid constraints.
