Joining the STA provides members with professional differentiation. The main remit of the Association (established in 1978) is to assist its members. To do this effectively it needs to ensure credibility and as such, the STA and its members are governed by the Articles and Byelaws. These documents set out the rules governing the Association including powers of the council, membership criteria and disciplinary proceedures. Member’s use this credibility to market their company’s services.

Whilst solar thermal systems have been a part of UK plumbing systems for many years, it is only in the last few years that Domestic Solar Hot Water (DSHW) systems have started to become widely accepted. The anticipated launch of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) should support huge growth in the DSHW market and in the many other forms of solar thermal energy that can help Britain to realise its 15% renewable energy by 2020 targets.

For the last few years, the solar electricity (PV) market has also been buoyant and with the introduction of the Feed in Tariff in April 2010, it is now a hughly significant and growing industry which is assisting in meeting UK electrical energy demands.

Now that the solar industry is moving from a niche industry into the mainstream, the STA has changed its profile to suit the requirements of this growing market. Whilst continuing with its lead role as a successful implementer of Government energy policy, it is now also working ever more actively with all interested parties to grow the whole solar market and industry.
